Anyone know about school loans?

Well I signed up for college last week and did my final registration today and got in. All I have to do now is attend an orientation so that I can finally sign up for classes. My question is how do these school loans work? I know I have to call but I hate to be calling different places where I'd have to talk to a retard who will just try and sell me on a loan. Or do any of you recommend a place/company to get one from. Also, what interest rates am I looking to pay on these? I can't talk to a counselor yet until after I take the orientation, but I already know he/she will just try and sell me on any student loan company just to hurry up and get me out of there, I went through that crap last year. Anyways any advice is appreciated.
