Ballistic experts

  1. As I've said before, everyone at work thinks they have to come tell me all about their new CCW. Please explain why all the CCW holders think they need a +P load. Most self defense situations happen at less than 10 yds. There is more stopping power when a bullet stays in the body than when there is an exit hole. The power factor is pretty low to get into the body. A hollow point traveling at slower speeds cause more damage at the point of impact than it does at higher speeds. In a confined area, I'd rather have a subsonic round that is not going to travel further than the intended target and wont leave me deaf for a few hours.

Most of the guns these people buy are not designed to handle +Ps and they risk causing early frame and component failures, from practicing with +Ps (if they practice). And I don't agree with practicing with Ball and loading +Ps for defense (familiarity reasons)

Before I got into shooting, I would use the hyper velocity 22 rounds for squirrels. It didn't matter if they were hollow point or not, a 50 yd head shot would go straight through and the squirrel would squirm, move for a while and possibly even run for a few feet. Now I use Subsonic HPs and a 50 yd head shot sounds like a thud, with only a few having exit holes and almost no movement after impact. I have dug around and seen the damage these rounds do.

For home defense, I'd prefer a shotgun loaded with 00 over anything, but if I had to use a pistol, give me an ashtray shaped bullet going < 1000 fps, that's going to bounce around in the chest cavity a little bit. While I can also control for follow ups.

So, I guess my question is, are the instructors teaching +P, or is it an ego thing?

Sorry for the long rant, but that has always been a pet peeve of mine. I have a lot of shooting pet peeves..:tooth:
