BBQ Competetion

I smoked some wings yesterday and tried a new chicken rub my nephew created. It was very good and I called him to thank him. He is making rubs and sauces for bbq competetions. I'm thinking that doing that wouldn't cost much. WRONG! When he told me the cost for grills, rubs, sauces, entry fees, meat and travel fees--it is a major expense. If you don't win, you go broke quickly. I always thought of bbq as a backwoods specialty with low cost. Heck, we used to burn out old trees to make charcoal and smoked rabbit tasted pretty darn good.
I checked out the "egg" thst Dixie uses. That sucker isn't cheap for something that uses charcoal. My nephew has a custom made grill that folds and travels in his truck bed. In his competetions, everything has to be made at the site. Rubs, sauces, everything has to be seen and tasted by the judges.
