I posted this on BBC in the Military forum. I hope you folks don't mind my reposting it here.

When I entered Government service, more than 50% of our congressmen and senators were veterans or had served in the military. It had been above 50% since the birth of our country. We fought wars but we also had people in DC who had seen war, shed blood and made sure that if war was needed, the blood of our military was not wasted. Since the early 1980's, less than 50% of our politicians have served and the percentage is going down. I hope that I am not the only one who has noticed a difference in our politicians in regards to fighting wars. So many want to send troops and fight while having never served(or their sons or daughters). I think before 1980, our politicians, while willing to fight, were more thoughtful in sending our troops into combat. As Veteran's day approaches and I listen to the world news, I hope our politicians truly reflect on what those rows of tombstones at federal cemetaries around the country stand for.

As always, I will lift a glass to fallen comrades in the military and agency I served with on Veterans Day.
