Westboro Baptists announce plan to protest soldier's funeral
    Friday, Jun 18, 2010 - 05:28:19 pm CDT
Westboro Baptist Church members have notified Plattsmouth Police Department they will be protesting at the funeral of Sgt. Blaine Edward Redding Tuesday, June 22.

Redding was killed June 7 while serving in the United States Army in Afghanistan.

Formerly from Plattsmouth and Elmwood, Sgt. Redding will be placed to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery in Plattsmouth.
Funeral services are planned at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Church of the Holy Spirit.

Plattsmouth Police Chief Dave Murdoch said he received a letter from Westboro legal counsel asking for protection while members protest from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“They know that their group is not looked upon favorably,” Murdoch said. “They are concerned for their safety.”

The Topeka, Kans., based organization is known for picketing at public events and funerals, mainly those related to gay people or soldiers in the military. As of March 2009 the church claims to have participated in over 41,000 protests in over 650 cities since 1991.

“Based on their web site, they have a protest planned about every day all over the United States for the next two weeks.”

Nebraska state law limits their protest to one hour prior to the funeral service and no longer than two hours after it ends. Protesters must stand a minimum of 300 feet from the church property line.

Murdoch said it is not necessarily a large group. “Hopefully, they won’t show up,” he said.

Another group, however, has contacted Murdoch. This group will be attending the funeral to protest against Westboro members.

“There are 49 of them,” Murdoch added.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Redding’s body will be taken from Roby Funeral Home, 346 Ave. A, to Church of the Holy Spirit via Main Street, to West Eighth to 18th Street, and to the church, 520 S. 18th.

“It would be nice if people were on the route to pay their respects,” Murdoch said.

Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Offutt Fire Department will be using their aerial trucks to hang a large American flag in honor of Sgt. Redding Tuesday.
