Everything is coming in now; even with the heat. I water everyday with a timer. Otherwise, the garden is on it's own. Here is what is ripe now

    1) Tomatoes: Cherokee Purple, Black Krim and Legend are abundant. Mountain Red and Christmas are heavily laden and close to ripe.

    2) Yellow and Zucchini Squash: you can have all you want. So can the neighbors and the rest of the county. I only put in 2 plants of each.

    3) Oriental Eggplant: very abundant and early to the table. My first year with this and I like it better than the classic eggplant.

    4) Bell Peppers: yellow, red, black and green have been coming in for about 2 weeks. All sweet and large.

    5) Gypsy Peppers: like a smaller oblong bell pepper. Many different colors on the same plant and very sweet.

Heirloom Tomatoes are the only maters I will grow. In the local stores, heirloom tomatoes cast $5/lb. Most of the heirloom plants are highly resistant to most diseases. They also need less water and in most opinions, they taste better than modern maters. They don't produce as many fruits as the modern plants but you still get several dozen per plant and they all have that old style taste. The Cherokee Purple has a slight smokey taste to it and is purple inside. Looks very good in a salad.

To grow heirloom tomatoes you need to put pellitized lime in the bottom of the hole at planting. Heirlooms need the extra calcium to set fruit and fight disease. I put the lime at the bottom and cover it with a handful of potting soil so the roots don't rest directly on the calcium. I used Miracle Grow this year and it made a big difference in the plant's growth and health. Hope your gardens did well in this drought.
