Grub Time

    As the water temps reach the low 40's, the grub starts producing lots of good fish. Fished with a slow, study retrieve or a lift and drop retrieve, let the bass tell you what retrieve they want. Smaller 2-3 inch grubs will catch more bass but large 6-10 inch grubs will catch a lunker. My standard for cool water is 8-9 in. grubs with 5 in. grubs used on very slow days. If the grub bite is on, I may not pick up my jig or jerkbait rods that day. Try to find shad schools off the main points and bass will be there feeding and waiting for warmer water to stage for pre-spawn. Even though the water is still cold, egg formation has begun and the females are eating to build strength for the spawn. Lots of people fish swimbaits but the grub has a unique action and the larger grubs give off plenty of vibration. 3-5 in grubs use 1/8-1/4 oz. round head jig with a 3(0) hook. 6+ in. grubs use a 3/4- 1 oz. round head jig with a 6-7 (0) hook.
