Man, shooting an M-14 in competetion? What sights did you use? What position did you use? They were still using M-14's for the engineer units when I got to Nam. Sumbeach to carry in the woods for very long and carrying enough ammo made you feel like an old man. Hard to swing around when you are constantly hitting limbs and bush with the barrel. I qualified expert with the weapon but hated carrying it. The early AR's we got in Nam were great weapons. I had an early version that rattled when you shook it. Later, in the IC, I heard this story:

The early AR's shipped to Nam had the 3 pronged barrel and rattled when you shook it. It always fired; never a jammed weapon; and would fire if dirty as heck. Well, a general didn't think that weapons should rattle and told the armories to tighten the specs for contract to fix the problem. The newer weapons started jamming as soon as they hit the field. A small speck of junk would csuse a problem. The general who caused the spec change didn't have to use the weapon. Sometimes, you just need to leave things alone. When someone would had the original weapon rotated home, there were a dozen guys in line trying to get it.

I last fired an M-14 in 1997 at the marine range in the Palms. I won a case of beer from a young gunny who didn't believe IC folks knew what they were doing.
