Light line and a fish too big

The fish have set up on the main channel docks using the dock cables as cover. I use spinning gear, 8 lb. line, and a 4 in. worm for these fish. I fish the worm on a 1/8 oz. round head jig with a 3 (0) hook. I hung the worm on a cable and tried to bow and arrow the hook off the cable. When the worm came off the cable I got one of the most vicious strikes I have every felt. The fish stripped off about 30 yds in the first run before I could release the drag and manually back wind the reel. This went on for several minutes before the fish began to tire. I figured I had a big Drum. It was a bass about 8-9 lbs. As I reached for him he dove again and the line broke about 3 in. above the jighead. I had about 2 ft. of abraded line he had rubbed against the cable.
I had line that was too light to handle this fish but felt he probably would not have taken the lure on heavier line. A dilemna for light line fishermen. :head_on_wall:
