Reel Painting ?

What type of paint do I use for painting a reel? I got some old ones I'm gunna expierment with, nothing fancy just wunna do a a one colored job on them. I painted one last night and I used some automotive paint in a can I had laying around. I didnt use any primer i just painted it, let it dry nevt to a light for about 10 minutes and then put on 2 coats of automotive clearcoat from a can. It came out ok but the paint comes off fairly easy.
