Surf Fishing (dialup warning)

Well, we're back from Ft Fisher. A couple lessons learned. I always use buy a bunch of different bait and this time decided to just use the FishBites stuff and catch a few small ones, then use them for cut bait. So Friday, no fish :doh:

Sat morning we stopped and picked up some mullet cut bait ($3). Baited the bottom hook with the bites on a #1 hook and the top with mullet on a 4/0. Caught a Pompano pretty quick off the bites, then caught a few blues on the cut bait.

Then Problem #2. The only hook sizes I had was the 4/0, some 3/0 and the #1s. Well, after missing so many fish we ended up all the way down to the #1s. They did ok, but I believe the gap was too small for the thickness of the bait. Hookup ratio was around 25%.

So the lessons learned. Always have some kind of cut bait, regardless of how confident you are on catching small fish on blood worms. Always have a large assortment of hooks.

Droopy hasn't been surf fishing in several several years and I believe he enjoyed it. We did get plenty of time setting the hook, reeling in and rebaiting, so we had lots of action. All in all, we had a Pomp, a couple spot, a 2' sharpnose shark and a gob of Blues. And the Boy got to play along with fish a little. Couldn't ask for better weather
