Tried the swim jig

Discussion in 'Talk, Talk (off topic)' started by Just Piddling, May 29, 2010.

  1. After all the talk about swim jigs during the last week, I decided to try it today just out of the blue. All I had was dark colored jigs, so I used a black 1/4 oz. The skirt was white with some shimmer in it that looked like scales. I trimmed a fluke down and threaded it on the hook. Against my better judgment (thanks to Dixie and AC) I did not add the treble hook

First cast, I let it fall to bottom, then started bringing it back slowly with a "walk the dog" type retrieve with the rod tip up. About half way back to the boat, one nailed it and took off sideways. I set the hook hard, as usual, and felt the head shake. I don't know how big she was, but she didn't move much before spitting the hook

So, I go back to my genius idea of adding a treble trailer. It took several cast and toying with the hook to get it like I wanted it, but here it is. Sorry for the sorry pics, but Droopy left his crackberry at home and I had to use my standard poor folk camera phone. The skirt looks shabby in the pic, but really looks good in the water

A little later I had another one hit it, although not as hard, almost like pecking. She turned out to be a 4 lber

I don't know whether the treble helped or not, but the jig hook was barely in the roof of the mouth and 2 of the treble hooks were penetrated into the back of her mouth.

I did catch another one with the swim jig, off a point later on.

Looks like I'll be ordering some professionally made swim jigs from Joey now.
