Copperhead Snake...

I discovered this bastich had made a trip through one of my pigeon coops the night before last (Wednesday night). Shown here trying to kill a female Jacobin pigeon... she got away, but not so lucky for one of my fantail pigeons, and a Homer/Highflyer mix fledgling. He bit both several times around the head and neck, killing them both. Then went back to the Jacobin's nest and ate both eggs.

The killing of the fantail left her mate with two eggs on his own. He'll likely not be able to sit the eggs successfully by himself, so I took those eggs and put them in the Jacobin's nest, and they took right to them, not knowing any difference between their eggs and the fantails. Not sure if that will be successful seeing as how the fantail had been off of the eggs for several hours. Still, it was quite warm overnight so I guess we'll see. Well, that and if I manage to keep the damn snake out. I took steps yesterday to do that, and will take more today. No sign this morning that the snake was back in the coop overnight.

If there is a chuckle in all of this, it has to come if and when the fantail eggs hatch, and the mail Jacobin wants to know if there is anything his mate wants to tell him.

Here's the Copperhead. I have two video cameras inside the coop, and this is a cropped image, zoomed in. This is shortly before midnight when the camera was on night vision. It is really pitch dark in there.



P.S. The Copperhead is about three and a half feet long. He's a big sucker.
